Alaska Folk Festival Mission

The purpose of the Alaska Folk Festival is to provide educational opportunities in the field of American folk music to everyone. The Alaska Folk Festival strives to maintain, perpetuate, and grow traditions of American folk music. The Alaska Folk Festival will always be free to attend (no admission costs) and will encourage the education and growth of non­professional music performers.

A Week of Music

The Alaska Folk Fest is the oldest and largest festival of its kind in Alaska. AFF only once a year, usually in April and lasts 7 days. AFF encourages and supports non-professional musicians as well as professionals. There are no auditions, anyone can submit an application to perform on the main stage. Selection for a 15-minute main stage performance set is mostly by availability and chance. Performer and volunteer applications are sent to all members around the end of January. They will also be available here on this website.

The Alaska Folk Festival is free to attend

There is no admission charge to any concert, dance, workshop or other event.Performers are not paid, with the exception of the featured guest artist. One guest artist act is selected each year for a paid engagement, which may include perfomances, workshops and discussions. This is the only paid act.

More than Music

Each concert has about 15 acts and lasts about 4 hours. Evening concerts start at 7pm and weekend afternoon ones at 12pm. Dances usually happen on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Workshops usually occur on Saturday and Sunday.
